Iman Abdulmajid was born in Mogadishu, Somalia on July 25, 1955. Being the daughter of a diplomat, Iman was raised in a comparatively privileged home, where she was quickly taught the basics of global politics. That interest not only stayed with her for the rest of her life, but it led her to Nairobi, Kenya to study Political Science at the local University. It was there that she crossed paths with fashion photographer, Peter Beard. Instantly entranced by her strong features, beautiful eyes, and model figure, Beard begged her to come to New York. After some initial skepticism, Iman crossed the Atlantic and made an instant impact on the global fashion scene. In 1979, Iman made history as the first African (or African-American) woman to appear on the cover of Vogue. Soon afterwards she made more history when she became the first woman of color to sign a cosmetics contract.

Iman became as big a star as a fashion shows model could become in that era, and quickly turned her attention to film. After some small roles in some truly terrible films, Iman got her breakthrough in the Oscar-winning Out of Africa with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. From there she moved on to roles in films like House Party 2, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and a cameo in the Michael Jackson "Remember the Time" video. Having grown weary of promoting cosmetics, Iman decided that the major brands were not doing enough to address the needs of women of color. In 1994, she launched her own line of cosmetics aimed exclusively at this often overlooked and underrepresented consumer group.

So far, the company has been extremely successful and in 2000 the company launched the I-IMAN Makeup line of cosmetics for use by all adult personals women. In May 2007 Iman launched her signature line, IMAN Global Chic, on HSN. She is CEO of IMAN Cosmetics, Skincare & Fragrances, a line she launched to market a selection of products towards women of color.

The movie shows how top designers are at Wintour's beck and call, and that her power-broker reputation is not unwarranted. She comes across not as fitness unkind but as a cool perfectionist, and she rarely lets her guard down. The "defining dynamic" in the workplace was Wintour and Coddington, Cutler says. "There was rawness, energy, excitement and conflict."

And more than a little bit of drama. Asked about his favorite fashion trends moments, all of Cutler's choices featured Coddington, like the day she came to cinematographer Bob Richman saying: "I have an idea."

She tapped him as a prop in a photo shoot with model Caroline Trentini. The final picture had him jumping in the air, equipment and all.

Wintour liked it - but made the comment that Richman's belly would need to be airbrushed to a slimmer shape; Coddington wouldn't hear of it. "They like to dictate the hair, the makeup, the clothes, the photographer - and that's annoying. I like to do that."

Never mind that she's a film star now. "A lot of people have said they've seen it ('The September Issue') but I don't think it'll change my life," she says. "I don't think I'll be Sarah Jessica Parker and not be able to go down the street."

Raina goes to comfort her and Sonja snides back that she doesn't want pity and that Raina will be in her position in a few more years.

Raina marches up to Franco and tells him she wants the elite job. He asks her to prove how much she wants it and there is some couch groping - which she videos with her phone. Which Franco is into...until she moves aside and tells him that she's 16. Well, OK, that doesn't actually have much effect on him - as he says she isn't stupid enough to take it to the police (why is that?). She says she'll show her dad and then proceeds to blackmail the job out of him with the threat of her convict father coming after her. She's supposed to be the naive new girl, right?

Sonja gets back home to see some roses why got - the cliched mature models sentiment on the card signed "-R". She sobs and smashes them against the wall, so I guess "R" is a bad person. Marissa had been dancing with the drug dealing model and talks him into taking her to bed, but on the way out he is busted by the under cop he sold to earlier in the night. Right in front of the paparazzi, who all snap away. If that were real, pictures like this would be all over the place each and every day. Instead, we see Lindsay carried out of a club by her bodyguards.

Raina returns to the house to see Chris trying to sleep on a bench. He tells her he's going home because he isn't made for this fashion world. We learn she's not naive at all, but is actually an abnormally confident world weary 16 year old who asks him "Who is?" Who put the emo in my fluff?

He congratulates her on the rumor that she booked a big fashion world job, but she tells him Sonja got it because she needed it more. So she's also ridiculously self sacrificing. She talks him into sleeping on her floor as he ignores the fourth call from Simon. There's a concurrent story with Isaac getting propositioned by Vivienne to be her boy toy in exchange for her using her connections to help him land some jobs so he can get his music career off and running. At first he refuses, but when the DJ at the party refuses to play his home made track, he finds her and kisses her to prove his dedication to...well, whatever it is they are doing.

I am certain there are aspects that are right. The drugs, the competition, the fact that there's is a skinnier Naomi Campbell model just waiting to take your spot are all cliches of the industry. But there are some that are clearly wrong and those are just as glaring. However, it's fictionalized drama, right?

And for all the hype about Naomi Campbell being the Supermodel of the show...she was around very little. After an hour, I saw maybe 15 minutes of her character and I don't feel invested. Instead, I felt like they threw too many characters and not enough solid story into the pilot. Do you agree?

Crystal Renn was miserable as a super-thin model who had heart palpitations when she'd worry that there might be calories in Diet Coke. Her moment of epiphany came when "Natasha Poly couldn't walk another step without being exhausted, or having hair clumps falling out." She knew she needed to live in the body she says she was supposed to have — specifically a curvy size 12.

In a new memoir "Hungry," Renn, now a plus size fashions, exposes her struggles with weight, health and self-esteem, fueled by the industry she says she still loves. That is, she loves it now that she has been accepted, even embraced, as a plus-size model by the fashion world. "I got to my lowest point, ... and it was either, 'I'm going to die and not accomplish the dream,' or, 'I can become a plus-size model and keep the dream,'" she says. "I am healthy now, the healthiest I've ever been in my life, both physically and mentally." Writing "Hungry" with Marjorie Ingall for Simon & Schuster was a significant part of the healing process, says Renn, 23.

She had told her story before, but always in quick hits for mature models magazines celebrating the novelty of an hourglass shape on its pages. The book is her attempt to move the needle on how people — everyone from wide-eyed young girls to jaded fashion insiders — perceive beauty. "I'd like to see everyone take on the attitude that there are women of all different shapes and sizes as 'the beauty ideal,' and

that it's not one type or another. There are interior design women who are naturally a size 2. You can't forget them; that's discrimination the other way," Renn says. "All women bring something different to the table, and we have to appreciate them all." Some in the fashion, modeling and magazine fields have been receptive to the idea, she says, noting that she's still working with her fuller figure in Vogue, Glamour, on the runway with Jean Paul Gaultier and in ads for Dolce & Gabbana.

It's often not the typical "pretty girl" who makes the biggest splash Natasha Poly anyway, she continues, explaining that, when a modeling scout first laid eyes on her as a chubby cheerleader, he was the only person other than her mother who said she was beautiful. Still, Renn is not ready to declare that runways will be filled with curvy types any time soon.
"I believe there is a cycle to everything — Wall Street, the housing market and modeling, too. Back in the Victorian days, it was all about a full figure. In the '50s, it was about the boobs. In the '80s, it was shoulders. And in the '90s, it was waifs," she says. "It can only go up from here." In the more recent past, say 2008, Renn writes in her book, she started to see a greater variety of models on the plus size fashions designer catwalks, and she's not just talking some size 2s and 4s. There also were girls with different hair color, skin color and body types, she observes.

Fashion alone isn't to blame for the idea of carbon-copy beauty mature models, nor is it to blame for all the girls out there with eating disorders, Renn says. But she adds that fashion does help create the lens through which others, like the chubby cheerleader she was in Clinton, Miss., see themselves. In hindsight, however, she cringes at her early modeling photos, as she focuses on the graying skin and lifeless eyes. Once she joined the size "12+" group at Ford Models, Renn says she finally started seeing images of the young woman she knew she was meant to be.

It’s not every fashion show that requires a backstage cleanup kit, just in case the fire hydrant prop near the teen model runway looks too real. Maurices and Animal Allies are teaming up for a fashion show this week at the Miller Hill Mall that pairs models sporting the store’s fall look and dogs from the local shelter.

It’s the kickoff for a nationwide campaign to bring awareness to teen model homeless pets and the financial struggles facing animal shelters in small- to medium-sized towns. Through September, the more than 700 Maurices around the country will have similar shows, with their own local fleets of pets and models.

“There is so much passion for animals between fitness models customers and employees,” said Monica Hendrickson, a marketing manager for Maurice’s who is organizing the show. “It’s just a natural fit.” How natural? In the months spent working on the collaboration with Animal Allies, Hendrickson said about six people in her office have rescued animals from the shelter.

About 10 to 15 dogs that are available for adoption will be walked by modeling agencies down a park-themed runway, complete with turf-like grass. The models range from local celebrities such as KQDS Fox 21’s renowned animal lover Beth Jett to Animal Allies volunteer Mimmu Salmela.

As for the dogs: They are to be announced, depending on which animals healthcare are still available when the shelter closes Tuesday night. Salmela has a dog and two cats from Animal Allies. She has fostered cats and newborn kittens and walked dogs at the shelter — but she has never walked one of those dogs in a fashion show like she will Wednesday, wearing a funky tank-top outfit and a kicky skirt.

“I’m hoping the dog will [do] all sorts of tricks so modeling agencies won’t have to look at me and my walking style,” said Salmela, director of development and public relations at KUMD 103.3 FM.

Off the runway, Maurices also is collecting donated pet supplies through September and has created Friends for Life charm bracelets that owners and pets can wear, with half the proceeds going to ASPCA, a national humane fitness models organization that works toward preventing animal cruelty.

It’s a tough time for animal shelters, which are taking in more pets than last year while receiving less support. Jim Filby Williams, executive healthcare director of Animal Allies in Duluth, told the News Tribune in late July that 558 dogs and cats had been surrendered to the shelter during the first six months of 2009, compared to the 272 animals that were given up in the first six months of 2008. When asked why they are giving up the animals, Williams said about 50 percent of the pet owners cite financial reasons.

ASPCA’s effects have been seen locally; Williams said the group helped support the recent expansion of Animal Allies and worked with the shelter to implement the Meet your Match program, a science-based assessment that assesses an animal’s personality and matches the pet to potential owners with a complementary lifestyle.

But, said Renn: "Thankfully the pendulum seems to be swinging back, at least a bit," she said. Within two months of Renn bursting back on to the fitness fashion stage as a size 16, Anna Wintour had asked her to feature in a "Shape edition" of American Vogue.

Wintour chose Steven Meisel, the pinnacle of American fashion world photographers, to shoot Renn – and he immediately booked the model to feature in a non-weight-related edition of Italian Vogue.

Renn appeared in Italian Vanity Fair, Italian Elle, CosmoGirl. She is the only fashion world plus-size model to appear on a Harper's Bazaar cover and has appeared in four international Vogue editions as well as appearing on the runway for Vena Cava, Heatherette and most notably for Jean-Paul Gaultier in his prêt-à-porter 2006 collection in Paris, for which he personally made her a dress and walked with her down the runway in the show's high-profile finale.

Kate Smith, a size 16 and the highest earner at Hughes Models, said: "The number of fashion trends plus-size models in the industry has quadrupled in the past few years, but we're still a tiny percentage of the whole modelling business.

"What does my head in is that I'm a model but I can't buy designer clothes that fit me. Everything is crawl-walk-run. We'll get to the point where every shape and size will be represented on the runway, but maybe not in my lifetime."

Once an afterthought, the models are now supporting players, selected not only for their spidery limbs and doe eyes but also for their ability to interact with their fitness model designers. And for viewers who want yet more, the models are appearing in their own spinoff, “Models of the Runway,” which is scheduled on Thursday nights directly after “Project Runway.”

It follows 16 women with names like Emarie, Kojii, Matar and Yosuzi as they mature models squeeze into a loft in downtown Los Angeles, endure a shortage of bathrooms and partake in the kind of squabbling familiar to viewers of “America’s Next Top Model” and “Make Me a Supermodel.”

As a designer is eliminated, so is the bollywood actress model assigned to him or her. The goal is to be the last model standing alongside the winning designer after Heidi Klum has uttered her final “auf” on “Project Runway.” The model’s take: $25,000 from L’Oreal Skin Genesis and a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.

The living arrangements and prize packages are standard fare in the other models agency series, but producers claim that that is where the similarities end.

“Our models are already working,” said Sara Rea, an executive producer of mature models of the Runway.” “They already have contracts. This is about what it’s like to see working models in the real fashion world, not women who are just starting out and trying to get signed.” (Winners of “Top Model,” on CW, and “Supermodel,” on Bravo, are awarded $100,000, management contracts and magazine layouts.)

But what I've really noticed is that the gap is being blurred between standard size models and plus sizes: before there were only super-skinny and pluses, but now you see all sorts of shapes and sizes. All beauty is now being appreciated."

Despite such optimism, the vast majority of couture and pr?t-?-porter glamorous women designers still want to see their clothes worn by skinny models and sold to skinny customers: even designers who have spoken publicly about battling their own weight ? Donna Karan, Karl Lagerfeld, Alber Elbaz, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte ? don't design for plus sizes.

But, said Renn: "Thankfully the pendulum seems to be young mature swinging back, at least a bit," she said. "The 2009 face of Marc by Marc Jacobs is Daisy Lowe, who has a curvier body than has been in style lately. The looks of Jennifer Hudson, Adele and Beyonc? are generally admired, not reviled. "

Within two months of Renn bursting back on to the fashion stage fitness modeling as a size 16, Anna Wintour had asked her to feature in a "Shape edition" of American Vogue.

Wintour chose Steven Meisel, the pinnacle of American glamorous women fashion photographers, to shoot Renn ? and he immediately booked the model to feature in a non-weight-related edition of Italian Vogue.

Renn appeared in Italian Vanity Fair, Italian Elle, CosmoGirl. She is the only plus-size model to appear on a Harper's Bazaar cover and has appeared in four international Vogue editions as well as appearing on the runway for Vena Cava, Heatherette and most healthcare notably for Jean-Paul Gaultier in his pr?t-?-porter 2006 collection in Paris, for which he personally made her a dress and walked with her down the runway in the show's high-profile finale.

Renn's agent, Gary Dakin, of New York's fitness modeling, which represents models who are UK size 12 to 22, says that their novelty use is coming to an end. Instead they will be photographed for one simple reason: because they are beautiful.

"I have been in this business for 11 years and I have seen this debate ripple through the fashion world a number of times," he said. "This time, though, the momentum of the debate feels different." Style arbiter Stephen Bayley agrees. Bayley's book, Women as Design, is published this week and looks at how definitions of female beauty have changed over the centuries. "In periods when we are impoverished, as now, there is a vogue for voluptuous women," he said. "

Kate Smith, a size 16 and the highest earner at Hughes Models, said: "The number of plus-size models in the industry has quadrupled in the past few years, but we're still a tiny percentage of the whole modeling business.

"What does my head in is that I'm a model but I can't buy designer clothes that fit me. Everything is crawl-walk-run. We'll get to the point where every shape and size will be represented on the runway, but maybe not in my lifetime."

The movie shows how top designers are at Wintour's beck and call, and that her power-broker reputation is not unwarranted. She comes across not as fitness unkind but as a cool perfectionist, and she rarely lets her guard down. The "defining dynamic" in the workplace was Wintour and Coddington, Cutler says. "There was rawness, energy, excitement and conflict."

And more than a little bit of drama. Asked about his favorite fashion trends moments, all of Cutler's choices featured Coddington, like the day she came to cinematographer Bob Richman saying: "I have an idea."

She tapped him as a prop in a photo shoot with model Caroline Trentini. The final picture had him jumping in the air, equipment and all.

Wintour liked it - but made the comment that Richman's belly would need to be airbrushed to a slimmer shape; Coddington wouldn't hear of it. If the atmosphere captured by "The September talent agency Issue" is true to life, Coddington is the only one who stands up to Wintour that way. "I think we both respect each other, or at least we both say that in the movie.

"I infuriate her, she infuriates me, and we're both a bit hip hop stubborn, but we're always respectful," Coddington says. "I think she's an amazing editor." Cutler and Richman, meanwhile, developed a genuine affection for Coddington.

"She is charming, delightful, passionate and so committed to celebrating fitness beauty and her revolutionary notion that clothes, models and photographers could tell stories and not just be objects," Cutler says. "Every billboard, fashion magazine spread, every advertisement we see today has been influenced by Grace Coddington."
Richman says with a laugh, though, that Wintour certainly made a lasting impression on him: "I do go to the gym now all the time. It was probably the heaviest talent agency I've ever been, shooting that - and that was my 15 minutes." Coddington started her career in front of the lens, winning a modeling contest sponsored by British Vogue in 1959.

She switched roles to become an editor a decade later, after a car accident. Coddington says she and Wintour ran in the same fashion trends circles in London and both came to the United States in the late 1980s. Calvin Klein hired Coddington as design director in 1987 but she joined Wintour at Vogue, on Wintour's very first day as editor-in-chief there, in 1988.

Coddington sounds wistful for the old days of hip hop fashion and magazines when the artfulness of the clothes was what mattered most. She really has no use for any Hollywood hoopla. "I stay far away from the celebrities. I am not very good with them. Normally I don't like to shoot actresses because I lose sight of fashion when I do and I love fashion," she says. "They like to dictate the hair, the makeup, the clothes, the photographer - and that's annoying. I like to do that."

Never mind that she's a film star now. "A lot of people have said they've seen it ('The September Issue') but I don't think it'll change my life," she says. "I don't think I'll be Sarah Jessica Parker and not be able to go down the street."

Filmed as a backstage companion to “Project Runway,” “Models of the Runway” focuses on the symbiosis between talent agency designer and model. Producers say that it also addresses a curiosity about the models that “Project Runway” viewers had expressed through e-mail messages and chat rooms.

“Heidi says in ‘Project Runway’ that a teen model can make or break a look,” Ms. Rea said. “You might see a design that’s not so good but is saved on the runway, or one that is good but is taken down by the model who’s wearing it.”

Tanisha Harper, a talent agency model who has worked for the photographer Patrick Demarchelier and the designers Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren, saw her role, both on the show and in real life, as a kind of muse. “You give them that inspiration — the ‘that’s my girl’ thing that can mold their collection for the next season, or that may change their perspective of how they design that dress,” she said. “We give them their extra little oomph.”

Christopher Straub, a current contestant on “Project Runway,” said that he doesn’t rely on his fitness model for inspiration — he already has his own muse in Victoria Beckham — but did admit that the model can be the final element in the designer’s success.

“For me it’s a very important relationship because you can make the prettiest design or the ugliest fashion trends design, but it all comes down to how it’s presented,” he said. “That model has to be your best friend because she’s going to be the one who’s selling it.”

Over time, he said, some were fashion trends christened “death models” by the contestants. “The word was, ‘Don’t go with her,’ “ Mr. Straub said of one.

And has the emphasis on hearing more from the models been helpful? “For the first time they were sharing the spotlight, and I think they felt they had the ability to control the teen model designs a little bit more than in the past,” Mr. Straub said. “There were definitely times when the designers would get frustrated with the feedback.”

Mr. Straub might consider himself lucky. This season he is paired at least twice with Katie Sticksel, a model who insisted it wasn’t her place to influence anyone.

“I know what looks good on my body, so I would maybe give tips,” said Ms. Sticksel, who has worked for the designers Roberto Cavalli and Peter Som. “But as far as telling them what to do, I can barely zip a zipper correctly.”

She's one of 16 beauties competing in the much-anticipated sixth season of "Project Runway," the interior design competition reality show that premiered on Lifetime. Philadelphia's Sessilee Lopez, a regular at New York fitness models Fashion Week who shared pages with Sims in Italian Vogue's black issue in August, has a look that mirrors her predecessor: sleek hair, high cheekbones, full lips.

"When I saw her, I saw a woman who looked like me, like my neighbors," said former mature modeling fashion journalist Vanessa Lloyd Sgambati, who covered Sims on the Milan runways at the peak of her career. "People would look at her in awe. . . . Her beauty was a natural beauty, a beauty that you would never find today."

Sims was born in Oxford, Miss., grew up as a foster child in interior design, and moved as a young adult to New York to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology. She wanted to be a model, but she repeatedly had doors slammed in her face. She kept trying and eventually called Gosta Peterson, a fashion photographer for the New York Times, and asked that they work together. That led to her landing a cover spot on the new Fashion of the Times supplement in 1967.

Ladies' Home Journal followed, and Life came after.

After five years of fitness models, she quit and started her own businesses. The idea was to lift the spirit of African American women from the inside. She stayed true to her message of black empowerment, turning down the title role in Cleopatra Jones (1973) because of the way the movie portrayed black people. (The role went to Tamara Dobson.)

"There were other black teen model, yes, like Dorothea Towles Church in Paris and Vogue's Donyale Luna," Talley said. "But she was a trailblazer."

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Reality fashion show "Project Runway" returns to television this Thursday after 10-month hiatus, hoping to "make it work" on a new actress famous channel and in a new city, Los Angeles, that is ripe with red carpet opportunities.

Delayed for months by a dispute between rival networks, the sixth season of the popular fashion agency models design contest comes back with a three-hour time slot on Lifetime Television August 20, along with a companion series about runway models and an all-star challenge with eight favorite designers of the past.

Host and model Heidi Klum, designer Michael Kors, fashion mature modeling editor Nina Garcia and urbane mentor Tim Gunn with his catchphrase "make it work" are all back to guide 16 fledgling designers in a competition to launch their own fashion line.

The biggest change will be the switch from New York to Los Angeles -- home of the biggest celebrity red carpets in the world.

"Los Angeles is a big part of fashion now because of celebrity, film, television and red carpet fashion world. So it gave us a chance to do all sorts of new challenges," said Jane Cha, one of "Project Runway's" executive producers.

Filming on the sixth season wrapped up in February, with four finalists sending their actress famous collections anonymously down the runway at New York Fashion. The identity of the four finalists has been kept a closely-guarded secret.

But after becoming one of the most-watched reality programs on cable TV with some 4 million loyal viewers, the show was left in limbo after producers, The Weinstein Co, decided to jump from NBC Universal's Bravo channel to rival Lifetime.

The legal battle was settled in April after The Weinstein Co. agreed to pay NBC for the right to move to Lifetime. Bravo meanwhile made a similar version of "Project Runway" on its own, called "The Fashion agency models Show," with designer Isaac Mizrahi, which got a lukewarm reception from fans and critics. The secret of "Project Runway's" success comes from its focus on the design process and the expertise and chemistry of Klum, Gunn, Garcia and Kors who are like "magic in a bottle when you put them together," said producer Sara Rea.

"The challenges are designed to stretch the fashion world designers, not to trip them up and embarrass them," said Rea's business partner Jon Murray. "Project Runway's" new sister series "Models of the Runway" shows viewers the lives of the models who wear the designers' creations each week. The women also get career advice from Klum, who made her name as a top Victoria's Secret model.

A September 2008 court decision against Lifetime to block "promoting or exhibiting," Project Runway bollywood actress placed the series in limbo for several months. Finally, in April 2009, the Weinstein Company and NBC Universal reached a deal for an undisclosed amount completing the move to Lifetime.

Longtime "Runway" producer Barbara Schneeweiss was happy the season could finally air, stating, "It was a bummer because we had shot season six and we all knew who the winner was and this poor person had to wait, wait, wait," she said.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — When the fashion industry ruled South Beach in the 1990s and earlier this decade, teen model were royalty.

Ocean Drive was their parking lot every day of the fashion season, packed with trailers and cars. Modelling crews lined up to wait for their turn to shoot on the steps of the teen model, recognizable for its unique art deco design. Lincoln Road, the main street of South Beach businesses, was dotted with agencies.

And at night, beautiful people would glide by on sidewalks and fill nightclubs, as much a tourist attraction as the city itself.

The golden Florida light that brought so many photo shoots to South Beach still shines. But the mature women models aren't coming anymore.

Models and agencies in Miami Beach, which owed its 1980s resurgence in part to the glamorous women image created by the fashion industry, say they have been edged out of the community they helped rebuild. Photo shoots here are no longer cheap. "For Rent" signs appear in windows once part of agencies. Art deco buildings that became mainstays in photo backgrounds have disappeared behind cement highrises.

Those changes have driven modelling business back to the ever-present fashion trends modelling centres - New York and Los Angeles. Business will never come back to Miami the way it was, some industry players say.

"Miami is not like it was when you saw 14 or 15 Winnebagos on Ocean Drive," Miami Beach modeling agency founder Michele Pommier said. "Now you're lucky if you see one."

A longtime Murrieta resident has emerged from the shadow of violence to become a finalist in a television contest that could catapult her into a high-profile modeling and acting career.

Codie Cabral has reached a point in life that she always seemed destined to achieve. But first she had to shake off a violence-tinged relationship that skirted the periphery of a widely-publicized criminal case that was dubbed the “Murrieta Fight Club gang.”

More recently, teen model had to convince TV show producers that she epitomizes the “beauty, brains and style” of Latinas today.

Cabral was first in line to prove that. She arrived 3½ hours before the start of Sí TV’s auditions in San Diego.

About 50 women were standing in line when Cabral left after Camilla Belle interview and audition session. The number of applicants had roughly doubled to 100 or more by the end of the day. Similar screenings took place in Miami, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Cabral stood out somehow, according to show executives, and the 21-year-old former waitress was one of two women picked from the San Diego audition.

“She was the first in line. To me, that was such a good omen,” Maria Perez-Brown, senior vice president of programming for Sí TV, said in a telephone interview. “She was early. She was prepared. She was so excited about the opportunity.”

Beginning 9 p.m. Sunday [Aug. 2], Cabral will square off against 14 other fashion trends women from across the country who are competing in the Model Latina Miami contest sponsored by Sí TV. The show, which can be accessed via many cable television companies, will unfold over 13 episodes that are slated to end in November.

The show, which reaches nearly 20 million homes via cable companies in more than 200 cities and metropolitan areas, in a press release urges viewers to watch “stunning, fiercely-determined women as they call upon their inner strength, beauty and intellect to prove they have what it takes…”

Perez-Brown said Cabral emerged as a perfect fit for the English-language “in-culture” show that mainly targets Latino audiences in the 18- to 34-year-old age range. Cabral shook off domestic violence and can now tell girls how to avoid, prevent or help stop it. Her blue-collar family is tight knit. She has, in Perez-Brown’s words “a foot in two cultures.”

“I listened to her story and said: She has to be part of the show,” recalled Perez-Brown, who has amassed an impressive list of award-winning television credits. “She was compelling. She was the perfect candidate for us.”

Last year’s contest winner – Jessica Caban of New York – has parlayed her victory into a modeling contact with L’Oreal, fashion magazine assignments, a television commercial, a role in the “Trevino” sitcom and other work.

Cabral hopes to repeat that success.

“I really want it to go that way,” she said in an interview.

Cabral wanted to be a model as long as she can remember. But it can be a huge leap for a little girl, especially if the path becomes stained by violence in the stretch between adolescence and adulthood.

Cabral, who moved to Murrieta at age 5 with her family, attended Thompson Middle and then Murrieta Valley High School. For nearly three years – on and off during that period -- Cabral dated Anthony Craig Smith, a football player.

The relationship turned sour, but its demise turned out to be a mere footnote in a high-profile criminal case that sparked 11 arrests in February 2007. It ended with numerous young men, including Smith, convicted of charges that included robbery, assault, burglary and arson.

Standing on a New York City rooftop with the Empire State Building in the background, wearing a $15,000 couture dress and posing for a famous fashion photographer - I had my own diva transformation in the Big Apple and it was more than I could've ever imagined.

As the reporter for Canada's Next Top Model's official website, I spend my days writing about what it takes to be a top fashion model, but I never thought I'd actually get to become one myself.

I showed up to the photo shoot location early in the morning, set to do my usual round of interviews with the finalists, creative director Nole Marin and that week's photographer. I found out the finalists would be doing two photos - one as a meek assistant and the other as a supermodel diva. The two shots would later be put together to show the two extremes and I was looking forward to talking to them about the experience.

Wearing jeans and a simple shirtdress, I hadn't spent much time getting ready that morning and wanted to concentrate instead on my busy day ahead.

But when one of CNTM's producers told me they were short a couple of editorial models for the photo shoot and wondered if I could stand in, I knew things were about to take a dramatically different turn.

Of course that was also the day the blow dryer at the hotel had broken down and I was hardly wearing any makeup. Not exactly the look I wanted to have for my top model debut.

"Umm, me?" I asked sheepishly, as I wondered if I was wearing the appropriate underwear.

"Yes. We need someone who will fit into the clothes," he said.

Taking that as a compliment, I agreed, and was soon whisked off to meet stylist Tammy Eckenswiller, who gave me my first outfit for my diva stand-in shot with finalist (and eventual winner) Meaghan.

As I grabbed the ultra high-end sheer gown worth more than my car I asked the one question models are never supposed to ask.

"What size is this?" I said.

"There's only one size. Sample size. So make yourself fit," replied Eckenswiller.

I went into the bathroom and first pulled on a body hugging black tube dress that was to be worn underneath the sheer dress. It came to my mid thigh, but the styling assistant rolled it up a couple inches shorter so it was barely covering my butt. Wow, OK. She added a beautiful silver sequined jacket and black gloves and helped me into some silver four-inch spike heels.

"Nice of you to get a pedicure," joked one of the producers, who's also a close friend of mine, as he watched me struggle into the shoes.

Note to self: never go on a work trip to New York City without perfectly manicured nails.

After a quick glance in the mirror - I couldn't believe how amazing that dress looked! - it was time to head upstairs for the photo shoot.

1. Know your industry
Before you think about attempting to become a model you should have at least some idea of what modeling is, and what will be expected from you to be successful. Modeling is a difficult job that requires a lot of hard work, loyalty and a thick skin, so think about why you want to become a model, and if you have what it takes to succeed.

2. Simple

Mainly modeling agency like to know what your age is, your height and stats, how to contact you, any relevant experience you may have and of course what you look like. Nobody needs your GCSE results, hobbies, or what part you played in your primary school nativity. Agencies obtain so many applications every day that the information has to be right there for us to see when we scan through, not hidden within inappropriate information.

3. Contact information

It may sound clear, but be sure you provide the fashion modeling agency with contact details they will be able to contact you on, or leave a message that you will actually receive. There’s no point giving out a mobile number to a phone that stays switched off for most of the day, or an e-mail address which you check once a fortnight. If an agency can’t get through to you, they will just stop trying.

Clear Photos

While sending photos into an agency, they need to be clear enough so that they can actually see what you look like. It doesn’t need to be professional photos, but agencies do need to be able to see your facial features and figure.

Camera shaken photos taken with a camera phone are useless, as are soft focus high street portrayal shots. Men, please don’t just send in a photo of just your upper body alone taken in the mirror, no matter how muscular you think you are, and girls, don’t send photos poking your tongue out or holding a bottle. Worst of all, is don’t send in a photo of you and ten of your mates on holiday with a note saying “I’m third from the left” stapled to it.

Be Original

Before appearing any modeling agency try to be yourself. If you try and make yourself look like any actor like, Brad Pitt or whichever star seems to be on TV most this week, you won’t get anywhere. Modeling agencies need original fashion models with their own sole look, not a replica of a celebrity. If you like to become a famous person then try a look-a-like agency, not a modeling agency.

Research agency

Before you move toward any agency find a little bit more about them. Visit their website or phone them and find out how they favor models to apply. Some agencies see applicants off the street; some require you to send in photos first.
Find the correct person in the agency to apply to. If you can get your application to the right person in the right way you can get a better chance of being successful. Think about whether your capacity meets the minimum requirements of those set out by the agency.

Prepared to travel

Before moving towards to an agency, make sure that you are prepared to travel. This applies to both fashion modeling work, and visiting agencies for job. Modeling jobs don't take position in your living room, so traveling is a basic division of being a fashion model.

For both aesthetic and practical reasons, that's the longtime standard in the modeling industry. A tall, slender body is considered a better "hanger" for a designer's clothes, both on the runway modeling and in front of the camera (which really does add pounds). Clothing samples are cut to fit tall, slender bodies. For women, that usually means clothes cut in sizes 4 to 6, fitting for a woman with a minimum height of 5 feet 7 inches. For men, jacket sizes run from 40 to 42 and clothes are designed for those who are minimum height of 5 feet 11 inches. Occasionally, an agency will accept shorter models (especially teenagers who wear large shoe sizes and have tall parents, in hopes that they will continue to grow). Some agencies also have divisions for petite and plus-size models, but the client demand is less for those categories.

Why is there an age requirement?

It's a matter of economics. Most fashion models have relatively short careers. Though many work through their late 20s and early 30s, the average retirement age is still comparatively young. The earlier a model gets started, the longer he or she can work. For Model Search, females must be ages 14 to 22 and males ages 16 to 24.

Of course, every model is different. Our first winner, Erin Wasson, won the search at age 15 and moved to New York after finishing high school, three years later. Our 2006 winner, Ali Michael, was also 15 when she won. She spent a year in Dallas, learning necessary modeling skills and developing her portfolio, before making her runway debut during the fall 2007 fashion shows in New York. She continues to commute between Dallas and New York for work.

What other qualities are important?

Good skin. A great smile. Healthy hair. Long legs. A long, narrow torso. Most of all, models need an outgoing personality and a supportive family

What makes this search different from most others?

First, it's free. Many model searches charge hundreds or even thousands of dollars just to enter. Second, it's for a local agency with a track record of more than 40 years and a roster of clients that includes, among others, Neiman Marcus, J.C. Penney, Dillard's, the International Apparel Mart and FD Luxe. Some searches are for agencies in New York or other cities and require a move. The Kim Dawson Agency provides models for clients in Dallas and the Southwest, but it also is affiliated with top agencies in fashion capitals around the world.

What kind of entry photos work best?

It's ideal for us to see you in person at our Aug. 22 NorthPark event. If that's not possible, send two photos – one close-up (preferably smiling) and one full-length. The photos should be of you alone, and at least snapshot size. Hair and makeup should be very natural. Professional photos aren't necessary.

What does the winner receive?

A one-year contract with the Kim Dawson Agency and $1,000 in NorthPark Gold, redeemable at any NorthPark store or restaurant. In previous years, many of the finalists also have been signed by the agency.

What jobs are typical for young models?

Area retailers steadily book Dallas-based models for use in both ad campaigns and catalog work. Depending on a model's body type, another opportunity includes fashion shows at department and specialty stores, malls and charity functions. FD Luxe also books many beginning models for editorial (non-advertising) shoots.

Can I go to school and model, too?

Absolutely. Modeling can be treated as any other extracurricular activity – sports, music, dance. The Kim Dawson Agency believes school should be a priority, and the bookers assign jobs and castings around school schedules.

How much do models get paid?

It depends upon the job. For a full-day booking, the standard rate is $1,500 for a new model, although magazines and newspapers pay less than half that rate. For hourly bookings, the rate is $150 for print and $90 for runway. The agency commission is 20 percent. New models rarely work every day and can expect to earn $5,000 to $10,000 in their first year.

Will I have to give up carbs forever?

No. Most fashion models are thin because of genetics: height and good metabolism. (Youth makes a difference, too.) A healthy diet makes sense for everyone and is certainly encouraged for models. But we've seen many a model chow down during photo-shoot lunch breaks on everything but salads.

The Academy for Eating Disorders, an international professional organization concerned with research, treatment, and prevention of eating disorders, issued guidelines in January aimed at the fashion industry, with the goal of improving the health of fashion models and preventing illness and death resulting from eating disorders. Among them:

* Adopt an age threshold requiring that models be at least 16 years old to reduce the pressure that adolescent girls feel to conform to the prevasive, ultra-thin standard of female beauty.
* For women and men over age 18, adopt a minimum body mass index (BMI) threshold of 18.5 (a female model who is 5' 9" must weigh more than 126 pounds, for example).
* Adopt a medical-certification requirement to affirm that aspiring models do not suffer from an eating disorder and/or related medical complications.
* For female and male models between the ages of 16 and 18, adopt a BMI minimum of 17.4 for female models and 17.7 for male models.
* Develop processes to identify models in need of intervention and to refer them to clinicians who can help them.
* Discourage all nonhealthy weight-control behaviors throughout the industry, such as self-induced vomiting and use of laxatives, diuretics, and diet pills.
* Provide educational initiatives for aspiring and working student models, professional models, and their agents and employers to raise awareness of the multiple health risks of low weight and restricted nutritional intake.
* Increase communication with advertising agencies to encourage them to use age-appropriate, realistic models in ad campaigns and reduce unrealistic computer enhancement in preteen and adolescent advertising campaigns.
* Include models of varying weights and body types on both the catwalk and in fashion magazines.
* Collaborate with politicians, stakeholders, and eating-disorder organizations to develop ethical self-regulatory codes for the fashion industry.

A group of celebrities, including Cheryl Cole and DJ Chris Moyles, are currently climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. The celebrities are undertaking the African challenge to raise money for Comic Relief.

Denise Van Outen, Gary Barlow, DJ Ferne Cotton and Cole's Girls Aloud band mate Kimberly Walsh are among the celebrities joining Moyles and Cole in climbing Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro. Despite its height of 19,340 feet , those attempting to scale Africa's biggest peak don't need climbing expertise, assures The Daily Mail.

The charity climb was the idea of Take That's Barlow. The singer said he wanted to make "a mountain of cash" for Comic Relief through the group's efforts. So far they have raised over £460,000. The money will be used to provide the people of Tanzania with mosquito nets for child models, which could help prevent the spread of malaria.

The celebrities climbing Mount Kilimajaro also include Boyzone's Ronan Keating, TV presenter Ben Shephard and singer Alesha Dixon. Despite the group's good progress, Barlow, who has been suffering from back problems, had to lie down during the first stage of the climb at the weekend.

The celebrities arrived in Tanzania last Saturday morning and were briefed by medics and trek experts. During this time, the team was also told they had brought too much with them and had to leave behind almost half of their belongings, such as toiletries and spare clothes.

Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole adult model is reportedly holding off on signing her 'X Factor' contract because of ongoing negotiations with Dannii Minogue.

According to The Sun, Cole has refused to sign up for the next series of the show until Minogue is also offered a contract.

Media reports have previously suggested that Simon Cowell was planning to drop Minogue from the judging panel of the show.

A source told the newspaper: "Cheryl celebrity told Simon straight - if it's not her and Dannii together, then he's looking for two new stars. There's no way he will let them both go."

The singer and her Girls Aloud bandmate Kimberley Walsh are taking part in the eight-day climb up Tanzania to raise money for Comic Relief, every second of which will be child modeling filmed and aired in the run up to Red Nose Day on March 13.

Cheryl, who is in the throes of a vigorous training regime, said: 'I’ve got blisters on every toe of both feet.

'We are used to getting in good shape when we are on tour. The dancing really keeps us fit but this is totally different.

'I sent Kimberley a text the other night after a 12-mile walk on the treadmill. When I went to bed I honestly thought I wouldn’t be able to get up in the morning.'

Kimberley , 27, said: 'The make-up and hair thing's obviously not good. The comfort's good, the clothes are comfy and that's more important.'

Cheryl, 25, dressed in the team uniform of tracksuit bottoms and Red Nose Day T-shirt, added that while she and Walsh may not look glamorous, they would act as a crutch for one another.

'If we didn't have each other I think I'd struggle to get up there,' she said, 'so I think we're at a bit of an advantage having each other.'

The pair are attempting to reach the top of Africa's highest mountain along with Gary Barlow, Alesha Dixon, Ben Shephard, Chris Moyles, Denise Van Outen, Fearne Cotton and Ronan Keating.

The journey is 38-year-old Take That singer Barlow's brainchild, a challenge he said he hoped would "raise a mountain of cash" to provide people in Tanzania with mosquito nets that could protect against fatal malaria-spreading mosquito bites.

It has not been an easy training regime so far as the celebrities try to prepare for Kilimanjaro's crippling altitudes, and some of the team have been working harder than others.
